A Track Record of Excellence
Since taking the reins in 2022, SIMCO has consistently exceeded expectations. Every year, they've surpassed waste-shipment targets, reaching an impressive 1,000th shipment earlier this year. Mark Bollinger, Manager of DOE's Carlsbad Field Office, praised SIMCO's exceptional partnership, highlighting their ability to complete critical infrastructure projects ahead of schedule and under budget, all while maintaining an impeccable safety record.
In the past three years, SIMCO has delivered major infrastructure upgrades, ensuring uninterrupted waste processing. Their efforts have resulted in over 2 million safe work hours in 2025, with zero lost-time incidents. Recent Milestones: A Glimpse into SIMCO's Achievements
- Underground Ventilation System (UVS): Delivered a year early and $10 million under budget, the UVS is the largest containment ventilation system in the DOE complex. With minimal disruption to WIPP activities, the UVS now provides 540,000 cubic feet per minute of clean air into the repository, enhancing worker safety and enabling simultaneous waste emplacement, mining, and ground control operations.
- New Utility Shaft: Completed more than a year ahead of schedule and $5 million under budget, this project adds ventilation capacity and serves as an additional access point into the mine.
- Salt Pocket and Salt Hoist Refurbishment: After years of geologic pressure, the original 55-foot-deep cavity was deformed, requiring a full recut. Now, with the refurbishment complete, WIPP can safely continue underground mining activities for Panel 11, the next waste emplacement panel.

WIPP, located more than 2,100 feet underground, is a unique network of disposal rooms carved from an ancient salt formation. Originally designed and constructed with Bechtel's expertise, WIPP has been safely accepting TRU waste since 1999.
