This was the reality for Brett McKay, a spirited tradie from New South Wales, Australia. Brett's initial symptoms, a persistent backache while he was in Banff, Canada, were initially dismissed as the everyday wear and tear of his demanding profession. The subsequent tests delivered a devastating blow: testicular cancer, which had already spread to his kidney and liver. This news sent shockwaves through his close-knit family, who were thousands of kilometers away in the regional town of Terranora.
Upon returning home to face a grueling treatment regimen, Brett made a decision that would unexpectedly touch countless lives. He turned to social media to keep his friends updated on his progress. What started as a way to connect with his immediate circle quickly blossomed into something far grander. "He said day one of his diagnosis … 'I want to be here, this is heaven'," Adam recalled. This profound appreciation for life was further amplified when Brett met Reana, his girlfriend, through a dating app while undergoing chemotherapy. Adam admitted that his brother's decision to date during treatment raised a few eyebrows. "We came in, and she was actually sitting next to him in the hospital bed, and she walked up to dad and I, gave us a hug and a kiss and I knew from that moment she was special," he said. Brett's father, Michael, believed Reana's gentle presence was a significant source of strength for Brett, stating, "She was the reason he lasted a little bit longer. She saw him at his best, and she saw him at his worst, and she was there when he passed."
Brett's journey was an emotional rollercoaster. Initially, there was hope as his tumor count dropped to single figures. However, the cancer aggressively returned, with his tumor count skyrocketing from 7 to an astonishing 75,000 within weeks, leaving doctors with no further treatment options. Despite the dashed hopes of ticking off items on his bucket list, like skydiving or running a marathon, Brett found solace and purpose in sharing his story. "He found joy in helping people and telling his story even through his own journey," Adam explained.

It's a sobering reality that testicular cancer is affecting younger men. In Australia, an estimated 1,040 people were diagnosed in 2025, with nearly 40 deaths. Research from 2021 indicated the median age of diagnosis was around 35, but experts like Dr. Vivienne Milch from Cancer Australia are observing a concerning trend of even younger diagnoses for testicular and other cancers. "These cancers are caused by a complex interplay of several risk factors that might include changes in lifestyle, diet, obesity, environmental exposure and other factors," Dr. Milch explained, emphasizing the need for more research.

Dr. Milch stressed the critical importance of early detection. "We really encourage men to get to know the normal look and feel of their testes, and actually go and see their GP if they notice something that's new, different, persists, odd… even though there's lots of conditions that can cause those symptoms, not just testicular cancer," she advised.
