Imagine your favorite team clinging to a thrilling overtime victory, only to have their star player go down with a potentially season-ending injury. That's the gut-wrenching reality BYU fans faced on Saturday. The Cougars emerged victorious in a 90-86 overtime nail-biter against Colorado, securing their second consecutive win. But the celebration was bittersweet, as the team's future hangs in the balance after Richie Saunders, their second-leading scorer and veteran leader, suffered a frightening injury just 45 seconds into the game.
Saunders' awkward fall and immediate clutching of his right knee sent shockwaves through the arena. Though he bravely gave fans a thumbs-up as he was helped off the court, his absence for the remainder of the game, coupled with the summoning of his family to the locker room, painted a grim picture.
And this is the part most people miss: While BYU's win keeps them afloat in the Big 12 standings (19-6 overall, 7-5 in conference play), Saunders' potential long-term absence could drastically alter their championship aspirations. Without his scoring prowess and leadership, the Cougars would be forced to rely heavily on AJ Dybantsa and Rob Wright III, pushing them to their limits and exposing the team's shaky depth.
The game itself was a rollercoaster. Despite being heavy favorites, BYU struggled to pull away from a Colorado team fresh off a blowout loss to Texas Tech. The Cougars' 16 turnovers, leading to 21 Buffaloes points, didn't help matters. Even with a seven-point lead late in regulation, BYU's offense sputtered, missing crucial shots and committing costly turnovers. Colorado, meanwhile, caught fire, draining five of their last eight shots, including two clutch three-pointers, to force overtime.
Fortunately for BYU, the Buffaloes' shooting touch deserted them in the extra period, allowing the Cougars to scrape by. Aleksej Kostic's timely three-pointer proved to be the dagger, giving BYU a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
But here's where it gets controversial: While BYU's 50% three-point shooting was impressive, especially on the day of Jimmer Fredette's jersey retirement, their struggles around the rim continued. Six missed layups and a mere 45% field goal percentage on two-point attempts highlight a concerning trend.

Individual performances were a mixed bag. Dybantsa, despite seven turnovers and a lackluster shooting night (6-20), flirted with a triple-double (20 points, 13 rebounds, 8 assists). Wright, fresh off a career-high scoring performance against Baylor, exploded for a new personal best of 39 points, adding five rebounds and four assists.
