Carbon Accounting Expert Panel: Shaping the Future of Climate Action (2026)

Unlocking the Climate Crisis: A Global Call to Action

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Carbon Measures are on a mission to revolutionize carbon emissions accounting, and they need your expertise! This is a call to all specialists in various fields to join forces and tackle one of the most pressing issues of our time.

The Challenge:
The ICC and Carbon Measures aim to establish a groundbreaking carbon accounting framework, and they're seeking a diverse team of experts to make it happen. The goal is to create a system that accurately tracks every ton of carbon emissions, ensuring transparency and accountability across the entire value chain.

The Expert Panel:
A Technical Expert Panel (TEP) is being formed to develop this innovative carbon accounting approach. The panel will consist of up to 20 specialists from academia, finance, industry, and civil society, each bringing a unique perspective to the table.

Here's where it gets intriguing:
The panel's task is not just to invent but to harmonize. They will inventory existing carbon accounting methods, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and create a unified framework that addresses global challenges. But here's where it gets controversial—the panel will also draw insights from chemistry, financial accounting, and product standardization, potentially sparking debates on the best practices.

The Action Plan:
- Principles and Scope: Define the core principles and boundaries of the carbon accounting system, ensuring it aligns with financial accounting standards.
- Data Revolution: Develop a system for precise, transparent, and timely company and product-level data, preventing double-counting of emissions.
- Guiding Principles: Establish guidelines that learn from existing approaches, overcome challenges, and enable global adoption.
- Real-World Impact: Create implementation roadmaps for products, ensuring practical application.
- Data Quality: Improve data methods and governance for global alignment and stakeholder consensus.
- Implementation Roadmap: Determine the path to success, including standard-setters and conditions for large-scale adoption.
- Knowledge Sharing: Publish peer-reviewed reports to educate and inspire.

Who We're Looking For:
The TEP seeks experts in carbon accounting, business governance, chemistry, geosciences, financial accounting, policy design, and related fields. A two-year commitment is requested, involving monthly calls and independent document reviews. Public engagements may also be part of the role.

Nomination Process:
To nominate an expert, send their CV and a cover note to climateopportunity@iccwbo.org. Nominations are open until January 9, 2026, with promising candidates invited for video interviews.

Advisory Group Support:
An Advisory Group of 25 members from the private and non-profit sectors will provide guidance and support. These members will act as ambassadors, offering in-kind or financial contributions. Suggestions for involvement include administrative support, research partnerships, fundraising, and external communications.

Get Involved:
To express interest in the Advisory Group, send a cover note to climateopportunity@iccwbo.org. The group's composition will be finalized by May 2026.

Leading the Way:
Co-chaired by Amy Brachio (CEO, Carbon Measures) and Karthik Ramanna (Professor, University of Oxford), the panel will be supported by S&P Global Insights. Together, they aim to shape the future of global carbon accounting.

As Amy Brachio emphasizes, 'This is about bringing diverse minds together to create a practical solution for a global challenge.'

With the Paris Agreement's 10-year milestone approaching, the ICC is dedicated to driving change at COP30 in Brazil. Are you ready to be part of this transformative journey? Your expertise could be the missing piece in the climate puzzle. Apply now and help shape a sustainable future!
