Charleston County's $1.5 Million Investment in James Island Intersection Safety: A Comprehensive Approach
James Island, South Carolina, is set to benefit from a substantial $1.5 million investment in safety improvements at a busy intersection, addressing growing concerns about pedestrian and driver safety. The Central Park Road and Riverland Drive intersection, currently lacking a dedicated crosswalk and flashing signals, will undergo a transformative upgrade.
County Council member Jenny Honeycutt highlights the challenges faced at this intersection, stating, 'It’s difficult to make a left-hand turn. The sidewalks are not very visible, and we need to enhance safety and security.' The proposed improvements include a marked crosswalk, pedestrian-activated flashing beacons, a new right-turn lane, and expanded sidewalks.
These enhancements aim to significantly improve safety while minimizing disruptions to nearby properties and historic trees. Honeycutt explains, 'There’ll be an enhanced crosswalk and the installation of rapid flashing beacons, which are lights that alert traffic to the presence of pedestrians crossing.'
The decision to invest in this intersection is driven by the increasing traffic and limited pedestrian protections, making it a priority for improvements. With major permits secured and final plans under review, the project is set to go out for construction bids in late March or early April 2026, with work expected to commence shortly after bids are awarded.
Honeycutt emphasizes the importance of acquiring the necessary right of way, stating, 'We’re working on acquiring the right of way and as soon as we get it all wrapped up.' This comprehensive approach to intersection safety demonstrates Charleston County's commitment to addressing the evolving needs of its residents and visitors.
