A heartfelt farewell to Colin and Laurie Rouse, the dynamic duo behind the lens of Dubbo Photo News for over two decades. Their journey is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance.
A Legacy of Capturing Moments
For more than 20 years, Colin and Laurie have been an integral part of the Dubbo Photo News family, bringing our readers captivating glimpses into the lives, landscapes, and events of their community. But now, as they gracefully step into retirement, a new chapter unfolds.
Retiring with a Bang
At 70 and 66 respectively, Colin and Laurie are embracing a well-deserved break from their professional lives. It's a bittersweet moment, as they bid farewell to their long-standing association with the region's beloved free newspaper. However, they're excited for the quieter life that awaits, especially with their five thriving adult children and ten grandkids, most of whom call the region home.
A Lifelong Passion
Colin's love affair with photography began at 19, a passion that has endured and evolved over the years. Together with Laurie, they built a successful photography and videography business in Dubbo, a venture that supported their family and left an indelible mark on the industry.
The Rise and Fall of a Photography Empire
The new millennium brought about significant changes in the photography world. The advancement of technology and the digital age posed challenges, but Colin and Laurie adapted, investing in a $250,000 digital processing machine to stay ahead of the curve. They were pioneers, the first on their side of the Blue Mountains with the capability to print digitally. However, the rise of cheap photo processing by large chain stores eventually took its toll, leading to the closure of their business.
A New Chapter Begins
Undeterred, Colin transitioned into videography, capturing the essence of eisteddfods and becoming the go-to provider for many regional events. Laurie, an integral part of their team, managed the back-end business operations, ensuring the smooth running of their venture. Together, they travelled extensively, working in numerous locations and capturing the beauty of their surroundings.
A Long-Standing Association
In 2004, Colin and Laurie moved into the Wingewarra St premises, marking the beginning of their long association with Dubbo Photo News. Colin's social photos became a staple of our publications, a commercial arrangement that lasted until their recent retirement. It was always a proud moment when their work made it to the front page.
A Move to Wellington
Eleven years ago, Colin and Laurie made Wellington their home, initially drawn by the affordable housing. They quickly fell in love with the area and became beloved members of the community. Their photos from Wellington have been a regular feature in Dubbo Photo News ever since.
The Impact of Technology
As technology continued to advance, it became a deciding factor in their retirement plans, coupled with their health challenges. Laurie puts it best: "Everyone's got a phone in their hand, and photography and videography have become a very different game."
A Thank You to Our Readers
If you've enjoyed reading Dubbo Photo News in Wellington, you have Colin and Laurie to thank. They've been the driving force behind delivering copies to local outlets, a physically demanding but rewarding task. With their retirement, this "public service" to the Wellington community comes to an end.
Looking Ahead
Now, as they put down their professional tools, Colin and Laurie plan to enjoy some social photography and continue their involvement in eisteddfods. They'll also remain loyal readers of Dubbo Photo News, and we, in turn, will miss their presence.
A Fond Farewell

Your beautiful photos have helped create countless memories over the years, and we wish you a wonderful retirement and improved health.
