Get ready, golf fans! Davis Riley is leading the pack at the PGA TOUR's season opener at the wind-swept Waialae Country Club, heading into Sunday with a commanding two-shot lead. This is shaping up to be an exciting finish!
Just 3 hours ago, Riley showcased his skills, navigating the challenging conditions with finesse. He finished Saturday's round with a score of 3-under 67, bringing his overall score to an impressive 12-under 198 on the oceanside course. The competition is fierce, with Harry Hall (66), Chris Gotterup (68), and Kevin Roy (69) all tied for second place, making for a thrilling final day.
Riley's performance was a masterclass in adapting to the elements. He shared, "You got to make some gritty pars in these conditions and just try to make some putts on these fast greens in crosswinds in tough putting conditions when you have a chance." He bounced back from a bogey on the 11th hole with a birdie on the 12th. His precision was on full display as he hit a wedge close to the pin on the 14th and sunk a crucial 15-foot putt on the 15th. He even managed to recover from a long putt on the 18th, showing his resilience and composure.
Riley's strategy was all about control. "I just started feeling really good with the swing and I was hitting my start lines," he explained. "That’s the biggest thing in this wind, is hit your start lines and control the curvature, and I felt like I was hitting some really good hold shots against the wind and hitting my start lines.” The 29-year-old, currently ranked No. 101 in the world, has a proven track record, with his individual PGA TOUR title from the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge and a team win at the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
He admitted to a slightly tense start on Saturday, making bogeys early in the round. "I could feel myself a little tense or trying to force it a little early just because we’re coming off the offseason," Riley confessed. "We hadn’t had really any competitive juices like this in a couple months. I definitely felt like I was forcing it a little bit early and trying to be a little perfect and I just felt a little tense.”
But here's where it gets controversial... Other players are also making their mark. Harry Hall, who secured his first PGA TOUR title in the 2024 ISCO Championship, is in the running, showing his skill. Chris Gotterup, a recent winner of the 2024 OneFlight Myrtle Beach Classic and the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, is also a strong contender. Gotterup highlighted the challenges, particularly with putting in the wind, stating, "I would say putting today was probably the toughest."
And this is the part most people miss... Kevin Roy, despite being winless on the TOUR, is also in contention. Defending champion Nick Taylor is trailing, along with Ryan Gerard and John Parry. Corey Conners, enjoying the windy conditions, emphasized the importance of ball-striking, while Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama are also in the mix. Vijay Singh, the 62-year-old Hall of Famer, is participating using a career money exemption, adding an interesting dynamic to the competition.
