Egypt's Role in AU Mission to Somalia: A Discussion with the FM and AU Chairman (2025)

In a significant diplomatic meeting, Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssef, discussed the deployment of Egyptian forces to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). This meeting, held on the sidelines of the Grand Egyptian Museum's opening in Cairo on November 1, 2025, delved into crucial aspects of regional security and development.

Abdelatty emphasized the importance of securing sufficient and sustainable funding for AMISOM, highlighting the ongoing efforts with international partners to ensure the mission's success. He also underscored Egypt's unwavering commitment to supporting Sudan's security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Egypt advocates for intensified continental and international efforts to strengthen Sudanese national institutions.

Furthermore, the Foreign Minister expressed Egypt's full support for the African Union's initiatives to resolve conflicts and promote comprehensive development across the continent, aligning with the AU's Agenda 2063. This includes backing institutional reform endeavors.

Abdelatty also stressed the significance of fostering a shared African vision that empowers the continent to make tangible progress in continental integration. He praised the ongoing collaboration between Egypt and the AU Commission, particularly in the recent Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development and the retreat of the Chairperson's representatives and envoys.

The meeting highlighted the necessity of adopting a holistic approach that extends beyond security to encompass development, intellectual growth, and capacity-building in the Sahel region. Abdelatty emphasized the AU's role in supporting conflict-affected countries and outlined the need for swift steps to reinstate member states to the African Union.

Concluding the meeting, Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's dedication to actively participating in African development initiatives, especially under the leadership of the President, who chairs the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Steering Committee and spearheads post-conflict reconstruction and development efforts. He also highlighted the pivotal role of the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, an African Union center of excellence, in implementing programs that foster peace, security, stability, and development. Additionally, the Foreign Minister praised the African Union Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development, hosted in Cairo.
