A special weather statement is in effect for Toronto, Mississauga, Markham, Brampton, Vaughan, and Richmond Hill. This means you should be prepared for potentially hazardous travel conditions. Precipitation may start as snow or rain later this afternoon, but it could change into freezing rain this evening. Up to two millimeters of ice could accumulate in some areas, making roads and walkways dangerously slippery.
But here's where it gets more serious: a yellow freezing rain warning has been issued for Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa. These areas are at a higher risk, with two to four millimeters of ice accretion possible. The precipitation is likely to begin as snow or ice pellets before transitioning into freezing rain, which could last for several hours. This could lead to extremely slippery conditions and even localized power outages due to ice buildup.
Authorities are urging extra caution if you must travel tonight, especially during the evening commute. Even small amounts of ice can create hazardous conditions on roads and sidewalks. The freezing rain is expected to end later this evening or overnight as temperatures gradually rise above zero.
A word of caution: For areas south of Highway 401, including parts of Toronto closer to Lake Ontario, temperatures are expected to remain just above freezing, so you may see little to no icing.
