The Cleveland Guardians have made a strategic move, adding left-handed pitcher Justin Bruihl to their bullpen while also opening up space on their outfield depth chart. This move comes as a response to the team's clear need for bullpen reinforcement, as evidenced by their recent acquisitions of relievers over the past few weeks.
A Lefty Reinforcement
Bruihl, acquired from the Blue Jays for cash considerations, brings with him a unique skill set. With a career ERA of 4.72 and a WHIP of 1.37, he has shown promise across five seasons with multiple teams. Last season, he struggled a bit with a 5.27 ERA, but his ability to get left-handed hitters out (.224 average, .580 OPS) is a valuable asset for any bullpen.
What sets Bruihl apart is his three-pitch arsenal: a sinker, a sweeper, and a cutter. In 2025, he relied heavily on his sinker, which averaged 90.2 mph, accounting for over half of his pitches. This pitch mix, combined with his impressive extension off the mound (6.8 feet on average, ranking in the 81st percentile), makes him a intriguing addition to the Guardians' bullpen.
The Outfield Shuffle
To make room for Bruihl, the Guardians designated outfielder Jhonkensy Noel for assignment. While Noel had his moment of glory with a game-tying homer in the 2024 ALCS, his 2025 season was challenging. With limited playing time, he struggled at the plate, batting just .162 with 52 strikeouts in 153 plate appearances.
The Guardians' outfield is now a crowded space, and the team wants to give opportunities to their young prospects. Chase DeLauter, George Valera, and C.J. Kayfus are all expected to be in the Opening Day roster mix for right field during Spring Training. Additionally, Nolan Jones, Johnathan Rodríguez, and potentially David Fry (who is recovering from Tommy John surgery) are also in the mix for right field duties.
A Controversial Move?
Some fans might question the decision to let go of Noel, especially given his memorable moment in the ALCS. However, with a deep outfield and a need for bullpen help, the Guardians had to make tough choices. What do you think? Is this a smart move by the Guardians, or did they let go of a potential gem too soon? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
