In an exclusive interview with Polyend, Igor Cavalera, the legendary drummer known for his time with SEPULTURA and his current projects, discussed his impact on the metal music scene. When asked about his status as one of the most influential metal drummers, Cavalera expressed his gratitude, stating, 'It's an honor to be recognized for my contributions as an artist and musician. I've always strived to push boundaries and explore new horizons. This acknowledgment means a lot to me, but I also believe there's always room for growth and learning.'
The interview delved into Cavalera's evolving relationship with drumming. He shared, 'My connection with drumming is a continuous journey of discovery. I'm constantly experimenting with different ideas and approaches, which keeps the instrument fresh and engaging. Rhythm is the foundation, the pulse that drives everything. Drumming is a physical and emotional expression, a deep-rooted instinct that connects us to our humanity.'
Cavalera's musical roots are deeply embedded in metal and punk, with their raw energy and confrontational honesty. However, he has evolved, exploring themes of space, texture, repetition, and trance. He explained, 'While aggression remains a part of my music, it has transformed. It's no longer solely about speed or power but rather about depth and intention. I've found a new balance between my aggressive roots and these more atmospheric elements.'
As a founding member of SEPULTURA alongside his brother Max, Igor Cavalera has also ventured into various other projects. He is the drummer for CAVALERA, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SOULWAX, and PETBRICK. Additionally, he is half of the DJ duo MIXHELL, an electronic music project he co-founded with his wife, Laima Leyton, in 2006. MIXHELL has gained international recognition, performing at renowned festivals like Glastonbury, Bestival, and Reading.
In 2013, Cavalera relocated to London with his family and joined the Belgian band SOULWAX, contributing to their album 'From Deewee' and touring as part of 'Transient Program For Drums And Machinery'. He then founded PETBRICK with Wayne Adams, a unique project that blends noise, electronics, and drumming. Cavalera's live performances often feature analog modular gear, drum pads, and visuals, captivating audiences at experimental festivals and clubs.
His recent releases include 'Aural Manifestations' on Damian Records in America and Deepthroat Records in Europe, as well as 'Alucinações Sônicas' on Hospital Productions. Igor Cavalera's journey in music is a testament to his artistic evolution and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of his craft.
Despite his success, Cavalera's departure from SEPULTURA in 2006 due to artistic differences remains a significant chapter in his career. This decision came after a period of personal growth, as he took a break from touring to focus on his family, including his son, born in January 2006.
The interview concluded with a thought-provoking question: How does Cavalera's evolution in drumming reflect his personal growth as an artist and musician? The answer lies in his willingness to embrace change, explore new genres, and remain true to his artistic vision, making him a true pioneer in the metal music world.
