The New York Jets are gearing up for a fresh start, and at the center of their plans is veteran quarterback Geno Smith. Head Coach Aaron Glenn has made it clear that Smith is their man, and the team is banking on him to lead them to success.
In a recent interview, Glenn expressed his confidence in Smith, stating, "No doubt about it, he's our guy." This declaration comes after a tumultuous 2025 season, where the Jets employed a quarterback carousel, featuring Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook.
The acquisition of Smith, a seasoned veteran, is a strategic move by the Jets. With his experience and leadership, the team aims to stabilize their offense and improve their performance. Glenn highlighted Smith's past achievements, including his impressive stint with the Seattle Seahawks, where he was in the MVP conversation.
However, Smith's 2025 reunion with Pete Carroll was not without its challenges. He struggled with an inconsistent offensive line, which contributed to his league-high 17 interceptions in 15 games with the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite this, the Jets see potential in Smith and believe he can be a competent starter.
"It's a second chance for Geno Smith, and he's excited about it. He compares it to a movie, a chance to rewrite his story," said Glenn.
The Jets' offseason moves have been intentional, focusing on adding veteran presence to a young team. Last season, the Jets had the second-youngest team in the NFL, and Glenn believes that bringing in experienced players will smoothen the transition and provide leadership in the locker room.
"We've added veteran guys, and that was intentional. It's a process, and we're committed to building a strong team," Glenn explained.
With two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, the Jets have an opportunity to further strengthen their roster. While Smith has been named the starter for 2026, his age (36 next season) might prompt the team to consider their long-term future at the quarterback position.
However, Glenn remains focused on the present, emphasizing the need to acquire good players regardless of their position.
"Our goal is to come out with the best players we can find. We're not limiting ourselves to any specific position," he added.
The Jets' strategy is clear: build a strong, experienced team with a proven leader at the helm. Whether Smith can deliver on his promise remains to be seen, but the Jets are optimistic about their chances for a quick turnaround.
