The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) and the Congregation of Jesus (CJ) have officially merged, marking a significant moment in the history of these two congregations. The sisters of the IBVM, known as the Loreto Sisters, have been an integral part of the Ss. Simon and Jude school in Phoenix since 1954. This merger, celebrated at a Eucharistic gathering in Loyola, Spain, brings together two congregations with a shared founder, Mary Ward.
"Mary Ward is considered the founder of both religious congregations, which share a common charism," shared Sr. Ginger Downey, OLVM, director of the diocesan Office of Religious Life. "This merger strengthens their witness and deepens their Ignatian spirituality, ensuring that Mary Ward's legacy of faith, justice, and service continues to flourish globally."
The story of the Loreto Sisters began in the 1950s when Fr. Paul Smith invited them to staff the parochial school. Five sisters left their homeland, Ireland, and settled in Arizona, where they have been serving the community ever since. Sr. Ginger Downey continued, "What started as a simple act of faith in God's providence has become a blessing for the parish, school, and the entire Diocese of Phoenix. The Loreto Sisters have dedicated their hearts to the mission of Catholic education, shaping generations of students with the spirit and values of their foundress."
As the Loreto Sisters transition into the new Congregation of Jesus, their dedication to the charism of Mary Ward remains unwavering. The community continues to be a source of inspiration and support, and their legacy will endure through the continued growth and impact of the merged congregation.
