Mike O'Shea's Personal Reasons for Choosing Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Family, Community, and Football (2025)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers' head coach, Mike O'Shea, recently made a significant decision, choosing to remain with the team for another three years, a move that offers a rare glimpse into his personal life and professional motivations. But what truly drove this decision? Why did he choose Winnipeg over a potential move to the Toronto Argonauts, especially when the latter seemed to offer more power and financial incentives? This is the core of the story.

O'Shea's interactions with the Toronto Argonauts, who are currently searching for a new head coach following Ryan Dinwiddie's departure, were described as "very professional" and "terrific." However, he kept the specifics of these discussions under wraps, calling it merely "looking at an opportunity."

His long-standing relationship with Toronto's general manager, Mike 'Pinball' Clemons, played a role in his consideration of the Double Blue. It was reported that joining the Argonauts could have meant more authority and a higher salary for O'Shea.

However, O'Shea was full of praise for Winnipeg and the Blue Bombers organization, calling his return a "good decision." He offered a rare peek into his family life when discussing the personal implications of his choice.

"I think we’ve carved out a very nice place here in the community," he stated, highlighting the importance of the community and the friendships his family has built. He also mentioned that his three adult children are now free to pursue their own paths, regardless of his location.

There was speculation that O'Shea might want to move closer to his aging mother, but he clarified that she is in good health and doesn't require his assistance. She even drove to Winnipeg by herself for a visit last summer.

However, when it came to football-related matters, O'Shea's transparency seemed to vanish. He spoke positively about pending free-agent Brady Oliveira and acknowledged the team's underperformance in 2025, falling short of high expectations.

And this is the part most people miss...

He revealed little about his plans, including the team's offseason strategy, the contract status of his assistant coaches, or the reasons behind signing a new three-year contract when he's comfortable working on expiring deals. Why not a one-year extension, allowing him flexibility in 2027? After all, he used the end of his previous contract to explore opportunities with the Argonauts.

"I’m on an expiring contract, I’ve got a few opportunities to explore,” O’Shea said. “I don’t go on expiring contracts so that I have the opportunity to look around (at other jobs). That’s just the way we do it.”

When questioned about his preference for working under expiring contracts, a team staff member intervened to end the line of questioning. O'Shea then added, "I’ve always bet on myself, but it’s never been for the reason to look around.”

This raises the question: Does O'Shea have ambitions for a promotion? When asked about becoming a general manager, his response was not positive. He emphasized his preference for teamwork and collaborative decision-making, stating that he isn't interested in having absolute control.

It's unclear why O'Shea views the general manager role as being about authoritative control. Most general managers describe their jobs as highly collaborative and involving delegation.

O'Shea's contract extension was announced alongside a new three-year deal for general manager Kyle Walters, who was also on an expiring term. The coach offered a brief comment on returning with his longtime colleague, with whom he's won two Grey Cups.

When asked why he and Walters rarely speak to the media together, O'Shea joked about the limited space at the podium. He then comically illustrated how two people would attempt to share the podium, which drew laughter from the room.

It's worth noting that the last time O'Shea signed a contract extension in Winnipeg, the press room's podium was replaced with a table and two chairs. This allowed him and team president Wade Miller to take questions simultaneously.

O'Shea did not appreciate a CFL fan's photo of him at the Toronto airport, which went semi-viral on social media. He criticized the fan for posting the picture, stating that it showed a lack of consideration.

What do you think? Did O'Shea make the right choice? Do you agree with his perspective on the role of a general manager? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
