A Major Upgrade for the Ozarks: Transforming an Airport into a Gateway to the Region
The Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport in the Ozarks is undergoing a significant transformation, thanks to a collaborative effort between city, state, and federal officials. This upgrade aims to enhance the airport's infrastructure and services, catering to the growing passenger base and attracting visitors to the region.
The airport, located at Fort Leonard Wood, has experienced a steady increase in passenger volume, serving over 11,000 passengers annually. To accommodate this growth, a 9,000-square-foot terminal is being constructed, capable of handling 50 passengers at a time. This new terminal will be purpose-built for commercial travel, prioritizing passenger comfort and convenience.
Colonel Steven Bartley, a Garrison Commander at Fort Leonard Wood, emphasizes the importance of this investment in the community. He states, 'It's an investment in our people, providing amenities that our current facility lacks, bringing us up to the standards of other regional airports.'
The terminal will offer more than just comfortable seating. It will feature dedicated security areas, easy Wi-Fi access, and other modern conveniences. Colonel Bartley adds, 'It's almost like a field of dreams; if you build it, they will come. This project demonstrates our commitment to the area and our dedication to making the airport accessible and welcoming.'
The airport's strategic location, equidistant between Kansas City and St. Louis, is another advantage. Colonel Bartley explains, 'This upgrade provides a convenient and affordable way for people to explore the area and travel to other regions. It's an opportunity to bring visitors to Fort Leonard Wood and encourage local residents to explore beyond their immediate surroundings.'
Construction is set to be completed this summer, and the airport will be ready to welcome passengers with its improved facilities. This upgrade not only benefits local passengers but also positions the airport as a gateway to the region, attracting visitors and fostering economic growth.
