Uganda is making significant strides in its space program, with a focus on building indigenous capabilities and fostering collaboration. According to Dr. Doreen Agaba, Team Lead of the Aeronautics & Space Bureau, the country is on a mission to revolutionize its space sector, drawing valuable lessons from the successful launch of PearlAfricaSat-1 in 2022. This historic event served as a pivotal moment, providing a platform for technology demonstration and capability testing, and now shapes Uganda's future in space.
Dr. Agaba revealed that the government's investment in PearlAfricaSat-1 was strategic, aiming to test and enhance various aspects of the country's space capabilities. The key takeaways from this endeavor have led to a multi-phase modernization of the Mpoma ground station, with three core upgrades currently in Phase Two of development. These upgrades include advanced communication capabilities, enabling the station to interact with multiple spacecraft categories, and the establishment of a national R&D laboratory, providing a space-like environment for local innovators and private companies to test their innovations.
Additionally, the bureau is setting up a centralized GIS data hub to coordinate satellite and drone imagery acquisition and management for all government ministries. This will ensure secure and localized data hosting services. To power these new infrastructure developments, the bureau is taking multiple approaches to build a critical mass of local experts, including government-funded scholarships for specialized training abroad and infusing the program into 10 co-opted universities.
Looking ahead, Uganda is set to develop many more satellites, particularly with the involvement of Ugandan youth. Two collaborative projects are in the pipeline, and universities are encouraged to design their own satellites. Dr. Agaba emphasized the bureau's ultimate goal: to achieve 100% uptake of space and aeronautic technology across all government sectors, leading to data-driven governance and optimized planning. This ambitious vision positions Uganda as a leader in space exploration and innovation, with a focus on building a sustainable and multidisciplinary space sector.
