Unveiling the Secrets of Comets: A Citizen Science Adventure
Unleash your inner astronomer! Are you ready to embark on a cosmic journey and contribute to groundbreaking scientific discoveries? The Rubin Comet Catchers project is an exciting initiative that invites you to become a part of history.
Imagine having the power to spot comets, those mysterious celestial bodies, and unravel their secrets. With the Rubin Observatory's early data, we're taking a giant leap towards understanding our solar system's origins.
But here's where it gets controversial... While telescopes and software are powerful tools, they might miss the subtle signs of cometary activity. That's where you come in! Your keen eyes and curiosity are the keys to unlocking these hidden gems.
The Rubin Comet Catchers project is not just about finding comets; it's about answering profound questions. How much water was delivered to Earth after its formation, and where did it come from? These are the mysteries we aim to unravel.
"We anticipate discovering approximately 10,000 comets over the observatory's 10-year mission," says Zeljko Ivezic, Director of the Rubin Observatory Construction Project. "Get ready for an exciting adventure!"
And this is the part most people miss... Citizen scientists have already made incredible contributions. The NASA Sungrazer Project has discovered thousands of comets, many of which are on unique orbits near the Sun. Now, the Rubin Comet Catchers project aims to explore the opposite direction, away from the Sun, to uncover a whole new world of cometary activity.
The Rubin Comet Catchers project builds upon the success of Active Asteroids, another NASA-sponsored citizen science initiative. With the help of volunteers, the Active Asteroids team has published over 20 scientific papers based on data from a 4-meter telescope. Now, with the Rubin Observatory's 8.4-meter telescope, we're taking citizen science to new heights.
