US Military on High Alert for Potential Iran Strikes: Trump's Decision Looms (2026)

The US military is poised for potential strikes against Iran, and yet President Trump has not finalized a decision, according to multiple outlets.

Reports on Wednesday indicate that the military has assembled sufficient air and naval assets in the Middle East to act within days, though the timing varies by source. The New York Times, CBS News, and CNN all cited unnamed officials in describing a buildup that could enable an attack over the coming weekend. Reuters, referencing a senior US official, offered a slightly different timetable, saying national security advisers were told in the White House Situation Room that all forces in the region should be in place by mid-March. CBS noted that the strike window could extend beyond this weekend.

Iran is expected to present a written proposal to resolve the standoff after talks in Geneva on Tuesday, according to a Reuters source.

During a Wednesday briefing, White House press secretary Karine Leavitt avoided specifying a deadline; she suggested Iran would be wise to strike a deal with President Trump, insisting that the administration has already “totally obliterated Iran’s nuclear facilities” but that diplomacy remains the president’s first option. She acknowledged only limited progress from the Geneva talks and noted remaining gaps on several issues.

CNN reported that one person briefed described Trump as spending a substantial amount of time weighing the situation.

Axios’ Barak Ravid said Trump met on Wednesday with the two negotiators handling indirect talks with Iran: Steve Witkoff, a real estate developer turned envoy, and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law.

On Israeli television, Ravid relayed that US sources characterized the Geneva discussions with Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, as a “nothingburger,” while the Pentagon prepared for a potential joint Israel–US operation that could last weeks. Sources claimed Iran has until the end of February to offer concessions on its nuclear program.

The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, along with its accompanying ships, is already in the area, and a second carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, is en route. Tracking data show the Ford near west Africa as of Wednesday.

Reports also note a large fleet of refueling tankers and more than 50 additional fighter jets in the region. At the same time, the Pentagon has begun relocating some personnel out of the Middle East to reduce exposure to potential counterattacks if a strike proceeds. Israel is reportedly preparing to participate in possible coordinated actions.

international voices warn of rising tensions. Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, told Al-Arabiya that any new US strike on Iran would have serious consequences and urged Washington to allow Iran to pursue a peaceful nuclear path.

In past actions, the US and Israel have targeted Iran’s nuclear sites and related facilities, with notable strikes occurring in 2025.
