BREAKING NEWS: Usman Khawaja Announces His Heartfelt Retirement Following a Clear Sign in the Ashes
Usman Khawaja has officially declared his retirement from Test cricket, revealing that the upcoming New Year’s Ashes match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will mark his final appearance representing Australia.
The 39-year-old made this poignant announcement during a press conference at the SCG on Friday morning, putting an end to months of speculation regarding his future in the longest format of the game.
Throughout his illustrious career, Khawaja has amassed an impressive 6,206 runs at an average of 43.49 across 87 Test matches, including 16 centuries. His remarkable performance earned him the title of ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year in 2023. In addition to his Test career, he has also participated in 40 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and nine Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) over his 15-year international journey.
KHAWAJA’S EMOTIONAL OPENING STATEMENT:
"I grew up just a stone's throw away from the SCG, specifically on Cook Road, and I vividly remember the day I saw Michael Slater drive by in his striking red Ferrari. It felt like a stroke of luck to witness a Test cricketer in person. As a young boy, whose parents were struggling to make ends meet in a modest two-bedroom apartment, I dreamed of becoming a Test cricketer myself, envisioning a future where I could drive any car I desired. I never imagined that my dreams would come true. Today, I stand before you to announce my retirement from all international cricket following the SCG Test match. Cricket has given me far more than I ever anticipated—memories I will cherish forever, friendships that extend beyond the sport, and invaluable lessons that have shaped my character off the field. However, I must acknowledge that no career is achieved alone; I have received immense support along the way.
To my parents, Tariq and Fozia, thank you for your sacrifices that often went unnoticed—the early mornings, the long drives, and your unwavering belief during challenging times. Mum, you were always there to console me when I returned home disappointed, and I will forever be grateful for that. Dad, you always believed I would play for Australia one day. Even when I doubted myself, you instilled in me the importance of values over ambition, teaching me to remain humble, respectful, and to treat everyone equally. I hope I have honored your sacrifices in leaving everything behind in Pakistan to provide us with a better life in Australia. 88 Test matches, Dad—does that suffice?
To my brothers, Arsalan and Nauman, I am grateful for the countless hours you dedicated to practicing with me in our backyard and at Centennial Park, where you would allow me those precious extra minutes with the bat. Without your support, I wouldn’t be where I am today, nor would I have developed my signature pull shot. You taught me that my journey would be more challenging than others, and if I wanted to succeed, I had to work harder, score more runs, and ensure I left no room for excuses. Your words have always resonated with me, and you were absolutely right.
A Special Acknowledgment to My Wife:
Rachy, my beloved wife, this journey has demanded more from you than it has from me, especially as you navigate the media's scrutiny. The missed moments, the long separations, and the pressures of managing our family while I pursued my dreams have not gone unnoticed. You have been the backbone of our family, allowing me to chase my aspirations. I am eternally grateful for your support, and I know you often remind me that all my international centuries came after I met you. You are truly one of my greatest blessings, having changed the course of my life and career. I thank Allah every day for sharing this journey with you. I love you dearly. To my children, Aisha and Ayla, you provide me with perspective and remind me of what truly matters, regardless of wins or losses. I hope that one day you will be proud of my achievements and the kind of person I strive to be. Rest assured, I will continue to spoil you with treats when Mum isn’t looking, as I can’t resist your hugs and kisses.
To Rachel’s family, including her parents John and Michelle, thank you for your unwavering support over the past decade. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful extended family. The fact that Rachel’s brother and father both enjoy golf is just a bonus and likely one of the reasons I married you, Rachy. I predict it will be a tough year for Pro V1 golf balls, as I plan to play a lot! To my friend and mentor, Bill Anderson, thank you for believing in me before the statistics reflected my potential. Your honesty, patience, and guidance during uncertain times have been instrumental in shaping both my career and character. To my teammates, coaches, and support staff, it has been an honor to share the dressing room with you. You have made the tough days bearable and the good days unforgettable. Cricket is not just a team sport; it’s fundamentally about the people involved, and I have been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such remarkable individuals.
Reflections on Life and Gratitude:
Throughout my journey, I have learned that not everything in life is within our control. I give my best effort in training, but ultimately, it is up to Allah, who has the best plans for us. If it weren’t for His guidance, I wouldn’t be standing here today. This game teaches humility, patience, resilience, and, if you’re fortunate, gratitude. Even on days when things don’t go as planned, I remain thankful. I hope to have inspired many children, especially those who feel different, out of place, or told they will never succeed. I have experienced these feelings myself while striving to become an Australian cricketer. But I’m here to tell you that you can achieve your dreams; you just have to keep pushing forward. Never let anyone convince you that you can’t, because if they do, you might never try. I am a proud Muslim man of color from Pakistan, who was once told he would never play for the Australian cricket team. Look at me now! You can achieve the same. As I step away for the final time, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and peace, or as we say, salaam. I am thankful for the journey, the people I’ve met, and the lessons I’ve learned. Thank you for allowing me to live my dream and for sharing it with me.
