The Chinese invented paper, but it was the Japanese who first bound pages of paper with silk and hemp thread into sewn books in the 12th century. In this workshop you will learn to make a traditional stab bound book and a receipt book in the same manner as Japanese artisans did centuries ago. You will use handmade decorative paper for the covers and also learn how to make book cloth. And you will be able to make these books on your own after the workshop. Peggy has been making books for 7 years and teaches both children and adults.

Sue Foss and Mary Macaulay will show us dying with the new freeze dried indigo with all the special techniques that make Indigo unique. Indigo is a challenging dye because it is not soluble in water. When a submerged fabric is removed from the dye bath, the white indigo quickly combines with oxygen in the air and reverts to the insoluble, intensely colored indigo.
The unique characteristics of indigo dyeing make it easy to create wonderful resist patterns on fabric. Because of the fact that the dye has to be reduced to get it into solution, and oxidized to have it turn blue again, it is a fun science project too!
Designs on indigo cloth are achieved with various tying techniques, such as traditional Shibori and tie-dye techniques. Other types of resist such as rice paste, glue and wax are also used to protect areas of the fabric to create intricate patterns. This is a fun workshop designed for the beginner dyer and creative enough for the advanced dyer. This workshop will be held in the church yard…..a great way to get to know your fellow AFA members and have a creative, productive day.
